Tomorrow is the 2008 Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, the second time of the year that Steve Jobs dons his black turtleneck and preaches to his flock. I have no less than 5 Apple products within reach at the moment, so I’ll be interested in what he has to say tomorrow. His keynote, the only part of the conference that anyone outside the conference pays attention to, will be at 12 CDT tomorrow.

Most likely, he’ll announce a new iPhone with 3G capability, and the availability of new iPhone firmware, allowing legitimate third-party applications (finally). It’s also possible that Mac OS X 10.6 will be announced (not made available publicly, just for testing by developers. The final version will then come out sometime next year). Interestingly, banners at WWDC don’t say “Mac OS X Leopard”, but just “OS X Leopard”, which leads some to speculate that it’ll be announced that Mac OS X will be available for just regular PCs. It’s possible, but I think if you’re getting that just from the banner, you’re reading too far into it.

Less interestingly, Apple may be revamping their .Mac online service, which no one cares about. It’s basically just expensive webhosting. It’s also rumored new laptops will come out, but I haven’t seen anything to substantiate that.

16 hours to go until my phone becomes obsolete.

I think you’re seriously underestimating the potential of the .Mac update. Using .Mac to seamlessly integrate your computer and your iPhone could revolutionise the usefulness of smart phones, and drive iPhone sales into the stratosphere.

Seamless integration would be great, but as a more technical user, I think I’ll be able to find third-party applications that can accomplish what I want without .Mac.

Perhaps not, but I do much of what .Mac does now with my own webhosting and using my computer as a server already, so I can’t say whether or not the new service will have any must have features.

I don’t think most regular users are going to go for it. If the price is right, maybe Apple can sell it to them. I don’t think it’ll be the next big thing, though. I’d be pleased to be wrong.

I think the biggest news on Monday will be the announcement of a Chinese wireless carrier. Wall Street would go bonkers and the shorts will all have what is coming to them.

lol if I knew people were actually gonna read this, I would have put more thought into it. Yeah, the introduction of the iPhone into new markets is a big deal too.

I’ll be signing up for MobileMe as soon as it’s available. Looks like a great way to keep my computers synchronized.
